When to Start the Application Process
The single most common mistake families make is starting too late. The most sought-after Swiss boarding schools — particularly Le Rosey, Rosenberg, and Aiglon — can have waiting lists of several years for the most popular entry years. For mainstream entry (typically Year 9 or the IB intake in Year 12), starting 12–18 months before the intended start date gives families the best selection of schools and the least time pressure on documents and preparations.
The Application Process: Step by Step
Swiss Academic Network guides families through every stage of the process. Below is the sequence we follow with each family.
Initial Assessment
Month 1Understanding the student's academic profile, interests, learning style, any specialist support needs, and the family's priorities — curriculum, location, size, and cost. This is the foundation of every placement. Swiss Academic Network builds an individual development plan at this stage.
School Shortlist
Month 1–2Based on the assessment, we identify 4–6 schools that genuinely match the student. We do not provide a generic list of well-known names — our shortlist is specific to the individual.
School Visits
Month 2–4We arrange visits for families, either accompanying them or preparing detailed visit guides. Many schools will not offer places without a campus visit and a meeting with the admissions team.
Document Preparation
Month 2–4Gathering academic records (translated and certified if needed), school reports, teacher recommendation letters, a student CV or portfolio where relevant, and completing school-specific application forms. We manage this process and review all documents before submission.
Motivation Letter and Essays
Month 3–4Most Swiss boarding schools require a motivation letter from the student. We work with students and families to produce letters that are authentic, compelling, and correctly pitched for each school.
Entrance Assessments and Interviews
Month 4–5Most schools assess candidates via English and mathematics tests, and conduct interviews — in person or online. We prepare students thoroughly for both.
Application Submission
Month 4–5We submit complete, polished applications simultaneously to all shortlisted schools.
Offers and Decision
Month 5–6We advise families on evaluating offers, negotiate where appropriate, and guide the final decision.
Enrollment and Visa
Month 6–12Once a place is accepted, we manage enrollment paperwork, school fee payment organization, student visa applications (where required), and arrival logistics. For families who need local representation after enrollment, we offer VIP guardianship services to ensure your child has trusted support throughout the school year.
Arrival and Settling In
OngoingWe coordinate escorted arrivals where needed and remain in contact throughout the student's first term.
Common Mistakes in the Swiss Boarding School Application
Most families applying without professional guidance make one or more of the following errors. Each carries a real cost — either a missed offer or a poor school fit.
- Applying to only one school
- Failing to visit before applying
- Submitting incomplete documents
- Not preparing the student for their interview
- Starting the process too close to the intended intake date
How Swiss Academic Network Manages the Full Process
Swiss Academic Network takes end-to-end responsibility for the boarding school application process. From the moment a family engages us, we build an individual development plan for the student — a detailed document that captures their academic standing, personal strengths, language profile, interests, and the family's priorities. This plan informs every decision that follows, from school selection to how we position each application.
Our approach is not advisory in the passive sense. We do not hand families a checklist. We manage the timeline, gather and review every document, arrange school visits, prepare students for interviews and entrance assessments, draft and refine motivation letters, and submit complete applications. Families working with us are kept fully informed at each stage without being burdened by the complexity of the process.
Our specialist has more than 20 years of direct experience working with Swiss boarding schools, including personal relationships with admissions teams at institutions across the country. This means families benefit from insight into how individual schools make decisions — insight that cannot be obtained from a school's published prospectus.
