About the School

Established as a university in 1890, the University of Lausanne is a public institution on the shores of Lake Geneva. Welcoming more than 15,000 students each year both from within Switzerland and overseas, the university has a vast curriculum, including exchange programs which sees UNIL collaborating with world-renowned universities. UNIL’s campus is spread across 3 different sites; each dedicated to a different area of study. All sites boast state-of-the-art laboratories for researchers, along with well-equipped lecture theatres for staff and students. Along with this, the university has close ties with the University Hospital of the Canton of Vaud (CHUV) and The University and Cantonal Library - Lausanne (BCUL). The library is home to over 2 million documents and modern research tools making it a perfect place for study.

Academics

Academic Excellence

Though UNIL’s research activities mainly focus on the themes of human and social sciences, medicine, and the environment the university has seven faculties these include: Law, Criminal Justice and Public Administration, Theology and Religious Studies and Social and Political Sciences. The university follows the Bologna framework, offering Bachelor’s degrees with the option to study further towards a Master’s. Some of these programs are delivered across two different universities for example: A Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Science will see a student complete their first year at UNIL with the rest at the University of Geneva. Enhancing the student learning experience. UNIL also provides opportunities for students to complete a PhD. Students may work with any of the university's leading 580 professors and make a research contribution with international significance.

Beyond the Classroom

Rich Campus Life

UNIL students enjoy one of Europe's most active campus environments. The university runs dozens of student associations covering sports, culture, politics, arts, and community service. Sports facilities on campus include tennis courts, fitness rooms, and access to Lake Geneva for water sports. The Sports Centre offers a comprehensive programme of individual and team sports. Lausanne's vibrant student quarter is home to independent cinemas, concert venues, and restaurants. The city's position between the Alps and Lake Geneva means skiing and outdoor pursuits are accessible year-round.
