About the School
Ludgrove School is one of England's most distinguished preparatory boarding schools, founded in 1892 by the celebrated amateur footballer Arthur Dunn. Originally established in north London, the school relocated to its current home near Wokingham in Berkshire, where it occupies a tranquil estate of woodland and playing fields ideally suited to its ethos of nurturing boys in a warm, family-centred environment. The school educates approximately 200 boys between the ages of 8 and 13, all of whom board. The intimate size is deliberate — Ludgrove believes that a close-knit community, where every boy is known personally by his teachers and houseparents, creates the conditions in which boys thrive academically, socially, and personally. The atmosphere is famously calm and confidence-building, encouraging boys to develop at their own pace without the pressures that can characterise more competitive environments. Ludgrove is perhaps best known to the wider world as the preparatory school attended by HRH Prince William and HRH Prince Harry, who both boarded here in the 1990s. That royal association reflects the school's long-standing position at the summit of English prep school life. Ludgrove's particular strength lies in its ability to prepare boys thoroughly for entry to the most selective senior schools in England — including Eton, Winchester, Harrow, and Radley — whilst ensuring they leave as confident, grounded, and kind young men.
Academics
Academic Excellence
Ludgrove prepares its boys comprehensively for Common Entrance examinations and scholarships to leading senior boarding schools, with a consistent record of placing pupils at England's most academically selective institutions. The curriculum spans the full range of prep school subjects: English, Mathematics, sciences, history, geography, languages, religious studies, art, music, design technology, and physical education. Class sizes are small, enabling teachers to identify each boy's strengths and areas for development from an early stage. The school takes particular pride in its learning support provision, which ensures that boys with individual learning needs receive appropriate and sensitive assistance without being singled out. All boys at Ludgrove are full boarders, living in a structured but relaxed routine that builds independence, resilience, and social skills alongside academic ability. Resident houseparents and matrons provide attentive pastoral care throughout the term, creating a home away from home that parents consistently describe as one of the school's greatest strengths.
Beyond the Classroom
Rich Campus Life
Sport plays a central role in Ludgrove life, with cricket, football, rugby, cross-country, and athletics among the principal team activities. The school also offers opportunities in swimming, tennis, golf, and equestrian pursuits. Music is taken seriously, with individual instrumental lessons available and regular ensemble and choral performances throughout the year. Drama, art, pottery, mountain biking, outdoor skills, and craft clubs provide a broad co-curricular palette. Boys are encouraged to discover and develop interests beyond academia in an atmosphere of encouragement rather than competition.
