About the School

Marlborough College is one of England’s most highly regarded independent schools, founded in 1843 and located in the market town of Marlborough in Wiltshire. The college educates approximately 960 students aged 13 to 18 as a co-educational full boarding school — one of the relatively few large English independent schools where virtually all pupils board — and occupies a magnificent 300-acre estate on the edge of the Marlborough Downs in one of England’s most beautiful rural landscapes. The college’s campus is a striking blend of historic architecture — including the original mound of a Norman castle at the heart of the grounds — and modern teaching and residential facilities developed across successive generations of investment. The scale and beauty of the Marlborough estate give the college an atmosphere of purpose and generosity that reflects its ambition for every pupil in its care. Marlborough is perhaps best known in recent years as the school attended by Catherine, Princess of Wales (née Middleton), but its alumni list runs far deeper: generations of politicians, writers, scientists, soldiers, and public figures have been shaped by the college. It is consistently ranked among England’s top co-educational boarding schools for academic results, breadth of provision, and quality of pastoral care.

Academics

Academic Excellence

Marlborough College offers both A-Levels and the IB Diploma Programme in the sixth form, providing students with a genuine choice of internationally recognised pre-university qualifications. The academic programme is delivered across 25 departments covering more than 40 subjects, ranging from the classics and ancient history to design technology, computer science, economics, theatre studies, and the full range of sciences, humanities, and modern languages. Teaching is delivered by a faculty of experienced and enthusiastic specialists, many of whom contribute to their subjects beyond the school through research, publication, and professional involvement. Class sizes are carefully managed to enable genuine academic engagement, and the college’s tutorial system provides individual pastoral and academic guidance throughout every pupil’s time at Marlborough. The college is a full boarding school, meaning the residential community is dense, supportive, and deeply integrated with academic life. University placement outcomes are excellent, with leavers regularly gaining admission to Oxford, Cambridge, the Russell Group, and leading institutions internationally.

Beyond the Classroom

Rich Campus Life

Marlborough College offers an outstanding breadth of co-curricular activities. Sport is prominent, with the college fielding competitive teams in rugby, cricket, hockey, tennis, golf, and many other disciplines across its extensive grounds. Music and drama are both of exceptional quality — the college’s annual arts festival is one of the highlights of the school calendar and reflects the genuine depth of creative talent in the community. Outdoor education, the Combined Cadet Force, community outreach, and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award complete a co-curricular offer that ensures every pupil develops a rich life beyond the classroom. The college’s 300-acre estate provides space and facilities that support an unusually wide range of activities throughout the year.
