About the School

Rugby School is one of England's most historically significant schools, founded in 1567 — placing it among the nine original great schools defined under the Public Schools Act 1868. Located in the market town of Rugby in Warwickshire, the school is perhaps best known worldwide as the birthplace of the sport of rugby football: according to the celebrated school tradition, William Webb Ellis first picked up the ball and ran with it on the school's playing fields in 1823, giving rise to one of the world's most widely played sports. Today Rugby educates approximately 810 students aged 11 to 18 as a co-educational boarding and day school, combining the traditions of one of England's oldest and most celebrated institutions with a thoroughly contemporary approach to education, pastoral care, and co-curricular provision. The 150-acre campus is integrated into the town of Rugby itself, giving the school a distinctive relationship with its civic environment. Rugby has a long and distinguished record in the dramatic arts — it produced the playwright William Temple, the philosopher and Archbishop of Canterbury, and has historically fostered exceptional talent in theatre and literature. Today this tradition of artistic and intellectual breadth sits alongside the school's strong record in sport, science, and technology.

Academics

Academic Excellence

Rugby School offers GCSE, A-Levels, and the IB Diploma Programme, providing students with a genuine choice of pre-university pathways that can be tailored to individual strengths and university ambitions. The academic programme covers the full range of disciplines across the humanities, sciences, mathematics, languages, and the arts, with a faculty of experienced specialists committed to developing intellectual curiosity and academic rigour in equal measure. Boarding is a central feature of Rugby's character. The school's fifteen boarding houses — woven into the town of Rugby — provide close residential communities in which houseparents and resident tutors build lasting mentoring relationships with every student. Day pupils are equally valued and fully integrated into school life. Academic standards are high, and the school's university placement record reflects consistent outcomes at Oxford, Cambridge, the Russell Group, and leading international institutions.

Beyond the Classroom

Rich Campus Life

Rugby School offers an exceptional range of activities beyond the formal timetable. Sport is prominent, with the school competing at high levels in rugby (naturally), cricket, hockey, football, swimming, and numerous other disciplines. The dramatic arts tradition at Rugby is one of the strongest of any school in England, with regular high-quality theatre productions and a culture that genuinely values performance and creativity. Music, visual arts, debating, community service, the Combined Cadet Force, and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award all feature in the co-curricular programme. Weekly voluntary activities and service projects encourage students to develop a sense of responsibility to the wider community.
